on eBooks and all things orange
Top three reasons:
I’m eager to share in this blog the steps I took—both forward and back—in the eBook process.
What would you like to know about turning a manuscript into an eBook?
Those are all terrific reasons! Each writer needs to look for the signs they're ready and then trust their gut. My questions is, with so many posts about how to do it, is there one source you found particularly helpful when learning to format for the different ereaders?
Good luck to you, too, Danielle! Laura, one of the first things I did was take a Jane Friedman Writer's Digest webinar on eBooks. She recommended eBook Architects for conversion and formatting. Joshua and his staff were TERRIFIC, and the price was a reasonable $150. I did have to wait, however: 11 weeks in the queue. I'll be posting more about that soon.
I've been thinking about your question, Beth. What has helped is that I recognize the importance of revising and of getting things right, including hiring the best people to do what I cannot (format, convert). Any followers I have will only buy my book and tell others about it if it's a good story and reads well on their eReaders. And beginners can do that as well.
Liked your post! More self-pubbed writers need to be talking about why they did it because too many writers with Big 6 aspirations are having a good old time bashing us.
Here's what I tell people--I don't self-publish because I was afraid. I did it because I was strong and had faith in my writing. I've written for big and small houses and am an Authors Guild member. The business is changing. I think a lot of the folks who are stuck with agents or who have lost their eRights are going to be hurting in a few years.
Why self-publish
Hi Debbie,
I fully agree with the notion that the time is right to self publish. I too have great confidence in my writing. I have written professionally for speeches and promotional works for small companies, as well as greeting cards and song lyrics. I wanted my mother to see my book published, I knew I was running out of time and With the changes in the market, It only made sense to put myself out there and take the plunge. If i had gone the traditional route she never would have seen it or that I dedicated For Always to her. I don't think its the publishers, but the bloggers that have the greatest impact on the success of a book in these technological times. I believe publishers see their impact as well. Best of luck!
